Mark Zuckerberg has offered his boldest articulation yet of Meta’s future in AI: not a general-purpose, centrally controlled superintelligence, but one deeply personal, always by your side, and working to help you become the person you want to be.
In a blog post, Zuckerberg says the company is now seeing early signs of its AI models improving themselves. Though the pace is currently slow, the trajectory is unmistakable — superintelligence is now within sight. But rather than using it to automate everything and place society on a universal AI-funded basic income (a path some in the industry advocate), Meta wants to take a more human-centred approach.
Zuckerberg envisions a world where AI enhances individual agency. Think less about AI replacing jobs, and more about AI as a life partner — helping you write, build, explore, create, learn, and grow. “As profound as the abundance produced by AI may one day be,” he writes, “an even more meaningful impact… will likely come from everyone having a personal superintelligence.”
To that end, Meta is doubling down on devices like smart glasses that see and hear as you do, paired with AI assistants that know your goals and habits. These wearables, Zuckerberg argues, will eventually replace phones as our primary computing devices. With them, AI won’t just live in the cloud — it’ll walk with you, see the world as you do, and help navigate it on your terms.
This vision sharply contrasts with more centralised approaches. Meta wants to empower people, not just automate labour. But Zuckerberg also acknowledges the safety challenges superintelligence brings, and hints that not everything will be open sourced.
He concludes the blog by calling this decade the pivotal one: the decisions made now will determine whether AI becomes a tool for empowerment — or just another system of control.
Meta is betting on the former. And it wants to build that future for billions.
