Instagram has introduced a new set of Meta AI features inside the Stories editor, allowing users to transform photos and videos using text prompts and preset visual effects. The rollout brings AI editing from chatbot mode into the default Stories workflow and gives users direct control over AI-generated changes without leaving the app.
How the new AI tools work
Users can access the new controls by tapping the paintbrush icon in Stories. A “Restyle” menu now appears, offering the option to type a prompt and instruct AI to add, remove, or alter elements in the frame. Meta AI can change hair color, apply accessories, swap backgrounds, or reinterpret the visual style based on natural language instructions.
In addition to prompt-based edits, the update includes preset effects that can redraw clothes, apply painterly styles, or animate scenes such as snowfall or flames on videos.
Using these features requires accepting Meta’s updated AI terms of service. These terms allow Meta AI to process and modify uploaded media, including faces and backgrounds, for generating edits.
The release expands Meta’s generative AI footprint beyond chat and into core posting surfaces. The company is also testing automated comment suggestions and has introduced the “Vibes” AI video feed inside the Meta AI app, which has increased usage. Parallel to new AI tools, Meta is shipping additional parental controls for supervising teen use of AI experiences on Instagram.
What this means
The integration brings AI editing to the point of creation inside Instagram, reducing friction for users and positioning Meta competitively as social platforms race to build AI-powered creative layers into everyday posting.
