All Meta-owned platforms — Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, and Threads suffered a widespread outage late night on December 11. Users across the globe, particularly in India and the United States, reported issues ranging from complete inaccessibility to slow loading times and problems with comments.
According to Downdetector, the outage began around 11 PM IST, with a surge in reports from users experiencing difficulties accessing these popular services. In India, approximately 31,000 users reported issues with Instagram, while 30,500 users faced problems with WhatsApp. The United States saw over 97,000 reports of problems related to Facebook and Instagram.
In India, as per Downdetector, Instagram was down between 11 pm to 3am. The services are back now.
What Meta had to say
In a statement on X, around 12.30 am on December 12, Meta confirmed the outage. “We’re aware that a technical issue is impacting some users’ ability to access our apps. We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible and apologize for any inconvenience,” said the company.
In a follow-up post on X around 4 am, Meta said that the services are back. “Thanks for bearing with us! We’re 99% of the way there - just doing some last checks. We apologize to those who’ve been affected by the outage,” said the social media company.
