Grammarly has introduced a redesigned document-based interface, built on the foundation of productivity startup Coda, which it acquired last year. The overhaul brings an AI assistant and a suite of AI-powered tools designed for both students and professionals, including an AI grader, proofreader, and citation finder. This update aims to enhance productivity while supporting ethical use of AI in writing.
As per a report by TechCrunch, the new interface follows a block-first approach, allowing users to insert tables, columns, separators, lists, and headers. Rich text blocks can also be added to highlight key information or provide tips and alerts, making documents easier to organise and navigate.
A sidebar now hosts the AI assistant, which can summarise text, answer questions, and offer writing suggestions in real time. The AI assistant is accompanied by several tools to assist with specific tasks. “Reader Reactions” enables users to select a reader persona and receive feedback tailored to that audience. The “Grader” tool can evaluate text against an instructor’s guidelines and publicly available course materials. “Citation Finder” helps generate and locate citations from public resources, while “Paraphraser” can adjust tone and style according to user preferences.
Grammarly has also introduced agents that detect plagiarism and AI-generated content. Luke Behnke, Vice President of Enterprise Product at Grammarly, told TechCrunch that AI-detection agents can be inconsistent but claimed the company’s tool is now among the most accurate in the market. He emphasised that the tool is intended to give students insights into potentially AI-generated text before submission, rather than serving as an enforcement mechanism for teachers. For policy enforcement, teachers are encouraged to use Grammarly’s authorship tool.
The update positions Grammarly as a platform that both teaches students to use AI responsibly and provides mechanisms to detect AI-generated content. The company says it has a “moral imperative” to help students prepare for the workforce by guiding ethical and effective AI use in writing.
Like many tech companies, Grammarly plans to integrate more AI agents into its products. This aligns with its recent acquisition of email client Superhuman and reflects a broader strategy to expand AI capabilities across its offerings. In May, the company raised $1 billion from General Catalyst to support acquisitions and strengthen sales and marketing efforts, signalling a clear commitment to growth and innovation in AI-assisted writing.
