OpenAI’s ChatGPT is experiencing a global outage, with thousands of users reporting problems using the app, generating responses, and retrieving previous conversations. Downdetector data shows a sharp rise in outage reports on October 9, 2025, at around 10:30 PM IST, indicating a widespread disruption affecting multiple regions.

User reports and issues
According to Downdetector, over 450 incident reports were filed in a single hour, far exceeding the baseline average of 20. Around 91 percent of complaints were linked to ChatGPT’s web and app platforms, while others involved the API and website. Users have reported frequent timeouts, missing chat history, and “Conversation not found” errors while attempting to continue past interactions. Some say the issue has persisted intermittently over the past three days.

Comments on Downdetector highlight widespread frustration. One user wrote, “All project folders are now gone. Error again saying conversation not found.” Another added, “System tries to respond to your prompt and it times out — it’s been bad for days.” Many also reported that the service temporarily resumes after refreshing but quickly fails again.

OpenAI’s response
OpenAI has acknowledged the issue through its official status page, confirming that the outage is under investigation. The company stated, “We are continuing to investigate the issue for the listed services,” referring to degraded performance in ChatGPT and elevated error rates for Gmail and Google Calendar connectors. Updates were posted multiple times between October 6 and October 8, indicating ongoing monitoring and efforts to resolve the disruption.
