Earth is set to witness a trio of sizable asteroids pass by in the coming days, according to NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). Three large asteroids are on a trajectory that will bring them near Earth between August 10 and August 12. While these space rocks vary in size, all are expected to make a close approach without posing any danger.
The largest of the group, asteroid 2024 KH3, measures approximately 610 feet across—about the height of a tall building. It is expected to make its closest pass on August 10. Though it will come relatively near, passing within 5.6 million kilometers of Earth, NASA has classified this as a safe flyby with no threat to our planet.
On the same day, another asteroid, 2024 PK1, will also approach Earth. This smaller asteroid, about 110 feet in diameter, will pass at a distance of 6.4 million kilometers. While closer than KH3, it too poses no significant risk.
The third asteroid, 2024 ON2, roughly the size of an airplane at 120 feet in diameter, is slated to make its closest approach on August 12. It will pass within 6.8 million kilometers of Earth, but like the others, it is not considered a threat.
NASA and other space agencies continue to monitor these asteroids, but all indications suggest that Earth will remain safe as these celestial objects continue on their journey through space.
