Hyderabad saw heavy rainfall on September 17, which led to extensive waterlogging, flash floods and gridlock across multiple areas of the city. The downpour left several neighbourhoods inundated and created difficulties for residents attempting to return home. Among those who stepped forward to help were food delivery workers, who assisted people trapped on submerged roads.
One commuter recounted his experience on X (formerly Twitter), writing that he was rescued along with his motorcycle by delivery staff from Zomato and Swiggy. “Hey Zomato, Swiggy, just wanted to share that your riders not only delivered food during this deluge, but also saved me and my bike from being swept away in the stormwater. They did the same for hundreds of people like me trying to reach home at midnight in Hyderabad,” he wrote.
He also uploaded a short video, filmed in waist-deep water, which showed individuals in delivery uniforms pulling a motorbike to safety.

The account of delivery riders’ efforts generated a wide range of comments on social media. One individual wrote, “I’m glad you’re safe. Thanks to great human beings who helped you.” Another questioned the practice of ordering meals during such conditions, asking, “How can people order food online in such situations? How will the delivery boy drive in such flood situations?”
A further response stated, “Thanks for sharing. It would be wise to train cab drivers and food delivery boys to handle disasters like this.” Others emphasised that the riders deserved recognition for their efforts, with one person commenting, “They deserve an appreciation for helping during a time of need.”
Hyderabad Traffic Police also issued a statement on September 18, confirming that officers, along with the Hyderabad Disaster Management and Asset Protection Agency, had been working through the night to reduce flooding and restore traffic. The department wrote, “We thank citizens for their cooperation. Stay safe and follow traffic advisories.”
Police further reported that two individuals, identified as Arjun (26) and Rama (25), had been swept away by rainwater on the evening of September 17. Officials from Habeeb Nagar police station stated, “Around 9 pm, after heavy rain, two people, Arjun (26) and Rama (25), were swept away in the rainwater. They have not been found yet. Three DRF teams are on the ground, but water flow in the area remains heavy.”
