Douglas Engelbart was an American inventor and a pioneer in the world of computers. He has done noteworthy work in the field of human-computer interaction that led to the invention of the computer mouse among other things.
In 1963, Engelbart invented the first mouse prototype at the Stanford Research Institute. It was a wooden shell with two metal wheels.
It was christened mouse as it resembled one, with the cord attached to it looking like a tail. However, Engelbart did not receive any royalties for it.
Later, in 1967, Engelbart applied for a patent and got it in 1970. Engelbart passed away on July 2, 2013.
