Banking facilities must be made accessible to each and every citizen of the country, Corporate Affairs Minister M Veerappa Moily said here today.

"Banking must reach all, must be made available to each and every citizen," he said inaugurating Corporation Bank's zonal office here. Speaking in a lighter vein, Moily said he had a particular affinity to Corporation Bank as it originated from Udupi district, his home district.

He described Udupi as the "cradle of banking in the country" as five of the top private sector banks in India had their origins there.

Later handing over Smart Cards to three beneficiaries under the Bank's micro-financing of Self-Help Groups programme, he lauded its efforts in this direction and cited the example of how the bank had transformed lives of Tibetans in Bylukuppe near Madikeri.

Earlier Corporation Bank Chairman Ramnath Pradeep said financial inclusion of urban marginalised people would be an integral part of the bank's mission.
