The Prime Minister has lauded the Right To Information Act calling it crucial in exposing authorities and their work which otherwise remain hidden from the public.

"RTI is now more extensively and more effectively used to bring into public face, many areas of work of public authority which would otherwise remain hidden from public domain," Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said on Friday.

He also said that the government is committed to the RTI act and is against any dilution in the act.

He, however, also said that a critical review of the RTI Act needs to be undertaken. "The RTI should not impede working of governance," the Prime Minister said.

"RTI is a powerful tool. We wish to make it a more effective instrument for ensuring transparency and accountability in administration," he added.
