Google Cloud CTO sees GenAI boosting Indian small businesses
Google Cloud's CTO Will Grannis believes generative AI will be a game-changer for small businesses in India, eliminating barriers to entering markets and creating inventory. He highlighted how Indian businesses are embracing cloud technology, citing his visit in 2023 where he saw even individual artisans using AI to avoid building unnecessary inventory and better anticipate customer needs.
"With generative AI, you can actually give an instruction to a model and it can generate images of a potential bag for sale in every color, in different designs with different backgrounds, without that company needing to have any data of its own. And without having to understand computer science at all, I can literally just give natural language instructions to a multimodal model to generate content," Grannis explained.
Regulating copyright in AI training
A new bill introduced in the US Congress aims to force AI companies to disclose their use of copyrighted material in training their generative AI models. The Generative AI Copyright Disclosure Act mandates that AI firms submit copyrighted works in their training datasets to the Register of Copyrights before launching new generative AI systems. Failure to comply would result in financial penalties, with companies required to file these documents at least 30 days before the public release of their AI tools.
Intel unveils Gaudi 3 chip
Intel has introduced its latest AI processor, Gaudi 3, as chip manufacturers race to develop semiconductors capable of efficiently training and deploying large AI models such as those powering OpenAI’s ChatGPT. According to Intel, the Gaudi 3 chip boasts more than twice the power efficiency and performs AI model operations around 1.5 times faster compared to Nvidia’s H100 GPU.
Microsoft's $2.9 billion Japan investment
Microsoft announced a $2.9 billion investment in Japan, focussing on boosting its cloud and AI infrastructure. This marks the tech giant's biggest investment in the country over its 46-year presence there. The funds will also be used to train 3 million people in AI and establish a Microsoft Research Asia lab in Tokyo.
Neysa secures $20 million in seed funding
Mumbai-based AI startup Neysa has raised $20 million in seed funding led by Matrix Partners India, Nexus Venture Partners, and NTTVC. Neysa plans to use the funds to bolster its infrastructure and accelerate research and development efforts. The objective is to leverage this funding to drive innovation, CEO Sharad Sanghi has said.
