Google Cloud Next: Google’s AI answer to Microsoft’s GitHub is here

At its Cloud Next event, Google has made several key announcements for Cloud, Google WorkSpace and more. One announcement bound to catch the eye of coders and developers is Gemini Code Assist. It offers AI-powered assistance to help developers build applications with higher velocity and quality in popular code editors like VS Code and JetBrains, said Google.

Google said that it deployed Gemini Code Assist to a group of developers inside Google and found they had more than 40% faster completion time for common dev tasks and spent roughly 55% less time writing new code. Thomas Kurian, CEO, Google Cloud said that  Gemini Cloud Assist provides AI assistance across application lifecycle, making it easier to design, secure, operate, troubleshoot, and optimise the performance and costs of an application.

Brad Calder, vice president and GM, Google Cloud said that Gemini Code Assist now allows developers to perform large-scale changes across their entire codebase, including adding new features, updating cross-file dependencies, helping with version upgrades, comprehensive code reviews, and more. “This capability is powered by Google’s Gemini 1.5 Pro model, which offers a one-million-token context window, the largest in the industry,” said Calder in a blog post.

Microsoft had powered its Github platform for coders with Copilot, its AI tool. Google’s new features in Gemini Code Assist are in response to Microsoft’s AI-powered tools for coders and developers.

Google said that through a natural language chat interface, developers can quickly chat with Gemini Code Assist to get answers to their coding questions, or receive guidance on coding best practices.

Gemini Code Assist is powered by Gemini 1.5 Pro large language model by Google. According to Google, the latest AI upgrade — currently available in private preview — This upgrade, now in private preview, brings a massive 1 million token context window, transforming coding for even the largest projects. “Gemini Code Assist now delivers even more accurate code suggestions, deeper insights, and streamlined workflows,” said Kurien.
