The vehicle is powered by a Fiat Chrylser-supplied 2.0 litre, 4 cylinder, turbocharged diesel engine which develops peak power of 140ps mated to a 6-speed gearbox. A petrol and diesel automatic option will be offered later.

Harrier will come with three driving modes -- Eco, City and Sport -- along with three terrain drive options -- normal, rough and wet. Suspension has been designed by Land Rover and Lotus Engineering, UK.

The Harrier will take on Mahindra XUV 500 and Jeep Compass. It is longer and wider than both its rivals. The XUV500 and Compass are more powerful than the Harrier. The market size for such full-size premium SUV is around 3,500-4,000 units a month with only two models presently in it.

It has been tested for 2.5 million kilometres in temperatures ranging from -10 to 50 degrees Celsius. The SUV has gone through more than 300 real life crash scenarios. The vehicle has been tested for front and side impact crash and certified for the same.

The Harrier sports an 8.8-inch touch screen display which powers the 320w nine speakers system developed by JBL and funded by Tata Motors. The system supports Android Auto and Apple Car Play, video playback and image viewing through USB.

The vehicle will come in four trim levels and five colour options. It will be manufactured at the Ranjangaon plant near Pune which is controlled by the joint venture company of Tata-Fiat. More than 800 sales people have been hired to market the Harrier.

Harrier’s platform will spin of several other products in the future including derivatives of the Harrier itself. A seven-seater variant could also make it to showrooms in 2020 with the same engine but tuned to deliver more power.
