The Ujjwal Discom Assurance Yojna (UDAY) scheme, to bail out the various state power distribution companies, may put an additional burden on the fiscal target.
Power and Coal Minister Piyush Goyal had said in September that the Power Ministry is at the final stage of framing the new tariff policy, which will soon be placed before the Cabinet for approval.
Giving a perspective, Pradeep S Mehta, Secretary General, CUTS International, said, "The outstanding debut of the discoms swelled to Rs 4.3 lakh crore in 2014-15, from 2.4 lakh crore in 2011-12, and their operational losses are being funded by debt, leading to banking stress."
