Minister of State for railways Rajen Gohain told Lok Sabha that in 2015-2016, the national transporter earned Rs 17,204.06 crore through booking of tickets online and Rs 28,119 crore in offline booking while in 2016-2-017, it earned 19,209.28 crore in online booking and 28,468.81 crore in offline booking.
In a written reply in Rajya Sabha, Minister of State of Railways Rajen Gohain said the national transporter has seen an increase in passenger traffic of 0.68 per cent and a spike of 0.99 per cent between Delhi and Mumbai during April- November 2017 as compared to the corresponding period last year.
"Digital transaction can check corruption and bring transparency along with solving unemployment problems," Gohain, the Minister of State for Railways said while participating in the Mudra Promotion Campaign organised here.
"It(railways) will not only help in intercommunication but will also help the farming community to export their produce to different parts of the country and fetch them high income."
Once the system is in place, passengers will be able to watch an array of popular films, serials and sitcoms on their laptops, mobile phones and other devices.
The Railways has sanctioned projects worth Rs 13,500 crore for the North East in this year's budget, Union Minister of State for Railways Rajen Gohain said today.
This was announced after Minister of State for Railways Rajen Gohain reviewed the performance and progress of ongoing Railway projects with General Manager, East Coast Railway, Umesh Singh and other officials during a visit here.
Gohain said the railways will have to move from merely developing rail infrastructure to other support services like technology upgrade, better logistic support and better passenger services in an integrated manner.
"Rather, it will be very helpful," he told reporters here, when asked if there would be "any difficulty" for the Railways with the central government's decision to merge the two Budgets.
The revenue foregone due to concession in some of major categories, including senior citizens, patients, physically challenged and Izzat scheme in monthly season tickets, in the fiscal 2015-16 was Rs 1,602.94 crore, Minister of State for Railways Rajen Gohain said in a written reply.
The financial effect of social service obligation on railways for the fiscal 2015-16 is Rs 24,938.57 crore, Minister of State for Railways Rajen Gohain said in a written reply.
