CPI leader D Raja today criticised the Centre's decision to reject the applications of Kalanithi Maran-owned Sun TV group to participate in the Phase III FM auctions, saying it was an attack on freedom of media.

"I condemn the denial of security clearances to the Sun network and not allowing Sun network to participate in the FM auction. It is an attack on the media and its freedom. Sun network has large number of journalists, technicians and employees working for it. But the Centre's act amounts to de-stabilising the Sun network," he said.

Charging that rejection of applications of Sun TV group shows the "authoritarian and fascist" character of the present dispensation, the CPI national secretary said the Centre should re-consider its decision.

Five companies of Sun TV group, promoted by DMK chief M Karunanidhi's son Kalanithi Maran, will not be able to participate in Phase III FM auctions as the Information and Broadcasting Ministry has rejected their applications.
