A 20-year-old man was brutally killed in Maharashtra’s Nanded district, allegedly by his girlfriend’s family, NDTV reported.
The incident took place when the couple decided to marry despite differences in caste. According to police officials, the victim was assaulted, shot in the head and then killed with a stone.
The victim, who was identified as Saksham Tate, had been in a relationship with Aanchal for about three years. They met through her brothers, and she often visited his home. Both of them eventually developed a good bond.
Tension escalated recently after her family objected to the relationship because the two belonged to different castes. Despite repeated threats, Aanchal continued to meet Tate.
According to investigators, when her father and brothers learned she was preparing to marry Tate, they attacked him on Thursday, leaving him dead.
During Tate’s funeral, Aanchal arrived at his home, performed turmeric rituals, applied vermillion on her forehead and symbolically married his body. She told those gathered that she intended to remain in his house as his wife.
“Our love won, even in Saksham's death, and my father and brothers lost,” she said, calling for the death penalty for the accused. She added that she chose to marry him because their bond remained intact. She said that even though Tate is dead, their love is still alive.
Police have booked six people under multiple IPC sections and taken them into custody.
