The CGO complex area, which houses several government offices, outside the NIA headquarters was abuzz with activity on Thursday evening as mediapersons made a beeline to report on the extradition of key Mumbai terror attack accused Tahawwur Hussain Rana from the US amid tight security.

The roads outside and around the National Investigation Agency (NIA) office wore a deserted look, as security personnel cordoned off the entire area and restricted any kind of vehicular movement.

Entry and exit from Gate No. 2 of the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium Metro station near the NIA office was also barred. (PTI)

Tahawwur Rana Extradition Live: Security tightened outside NIA HQ

Ahead of the production of 26/11 Mumbai attacks alleged mastermind Tahawwur Hussain Rana before Patiala House court in the national capital, Delhi Police has removed mediapersons and members of the public from the court premises, citing security concerns.

Meanwhile, senior advocate Dayan Krishnan and special public prosecutor Narender Mann who are representing the National Investigation Agency reached the court premises.

Advocate Piyush Sachdeva from Delhi Legal Services will represent 26/11 Mumbai attacks accused Tahawwur Rana. The advocate has arrived at Patiala House Court in Delhi.

Maharashtra Deputy CM Eknath Shinde took to X and said, "Tahawwur Rana, the mastermind of 26/11 - the biggest terrorist attack on the country has been brought to India. For this, I wholeheartedly congratulate Prime Minister Narendra Modi. About a month ago, there was a discussion between Prime Minister Modi and US President Donald Trump. According to that, America transferred the biggest criminal of the country to India. I also congratulate EAM Dr S Jaishankar for this. There is no doubt that Tahawwur Rana, responsible for the attack on the world's largest democracy, will get severe punishment."

The National Investigation Agency on Thursday said it has "successfully secured the extradition" of Tahawwur Hussain Rana, a key accused in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks.

In a statement, the NIA said the extradition happened after years of sustained and concerted efforts to bring the key conspirator behind the 2008 mayhem to justice.

"With the active assistance of USDoJ, the US Sky Marshal, NIA worked closely with other Indian intelligence agencies, NSG through the entire extradition process, which also saw India’s Ministry of External Affairs and Ministry of Home Affairs coordinating with the other relevant authorities in the United States to take the matter to its successful conclusion", the statement read. He has been in jail in the US jail for the last about 10 years and then for a person like him to say as if you see something wrong has been done to him. The US court has conclusively found that he was a co-conspirator in the Mumbai massacre along with David Headley, he is an operator of Lashkar-e-Taiba. He provided all support, including infrastructure and camouflage support, to David Headley when Headley visited India. Senior Congress leader and former Union home minister Sushilkumar Shinde and the other opposition parties on Thursday welcomed the extradition of the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks case accused Tahawwur Hussain Rana.

"It's a good thing," Shinde told reporters in Ahmedabad, where he attended the AICC session.

Shinde was the Union home minister in the Congress-led UPA government in 2012 when Ajmal Amir Kasab, the lone terrorist captured alive from the Pakistani group that carried out the terror attack, was hanged to death in Pune's Yerawada Jail.

A Delhi court has received the trial records of the 26/11 Mumbai attacks ahead of its alleged mastermind Tahawwur Hussain Rana's arrival in India from the US, a court source said.

Rana, a key accused in the 2008 attacks, is being brought to India on a special flight on Thursday after his last-ditch attempt to evade extradition failed as the US Supreme Court justices rejected his application.

The records were received by the court of District Judge Vimal Kumar Yadav recently in pursuance of his January 28 direction to the staff of a Mumbai court to send the records.

The judge passed the order on an application moved by the National Investigation Agency in Delhi, seeking to retrieve the records from Mumbai.

The extradition of Tahawwur Rana – a key accused in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks – from the United States to India, marks a significant breakthrough for India’s probe agencies and its diplomatic efforts. Mumbai terror attack accused Tahawwur Rana is likely to be brought to India in a special flight on Thursday after all hurdles for his extradition were removed by the US, people familiar with the matter said on Wednesday.

Rana, 64, a Canadian national of Pakistani origin, was lodged in the Metropolitan Detention Centre in Los Angeles.

Mumbai terror attack case accused Tahawwur Hussain Rana, who is being extradited from the US, is likely to be lodged in a high-security ward in Tihar jail here when he reaches India, prison sources said. All necessary preparations have been made in the jail, they said.

Rana, 64, is a Pakistan-born Canadian national and close associate of one of the main conspirators of the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks David Coleman Headley alias Daood Gilani, a US citizen.

Rana is being brought to India after his last-ditch attempt to evade extradition failed as the US Supreme Court justices rejected his application.

The Centre has appointed a special public prosecutor to conduct a trial in the case related to Mumbai terror attack case accused Tahawwur Hussain Rana, who is being extradited from the US and is expected to arrive here on Thursday.

In a late-night notification, the Union home ministry said advocate Narender Mann will be the special public prosecutor for conducting trial and other matters related to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) case RC-04/2009/NIA/DLI (Mumbai attacks) for three years.
