Mumbai reported its first case of Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS), a rare nerve disorder, after a 64-year-old tested positive on Friday, according to a civic official.
With this, the number of suspected GBS cases in Maharashtra has risen to 150.
On February 1, a 60-year-old man from Pune who was diagnosed with GBS died due to respiratory failure. Earlier, four suspected GBS deaths had been reported in the state.
GBS is a rare condition that causes sudden numbness and muscle weakness, with symptoms including severe weakness in the limbs. Campylobacter jejuni, a bacterium found in contaminated food and water, is believed to be the reason for the outbreak.
