In a significant diplomatic and anti-terror development, India is reportedly preparing to formally seek the extradition of Pavittar Singh Batala, a key Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) operative, from the U.S.
The latest development follows a large-scale anti-terror crackdown by U.S. law enforcement agencies that led to multiple arrests and the seizure of weapons and cash, exposing the operational scale of a suspected international Khalistani terror ring.
As per top government sources cited in a News18 report, India is activating legal procedures under the India-U.S. extradition treaty to secure Batala’s custody. He is currently in U.S. custody after detention by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), SWAT teams, and other American agencies during raids conducted across several states.
Batala, a Punjab-based gangster turned Khalistani operative, is considered a close associate of Lakhbir Singh alias Landa, a designated terrorist believed to be operating from Pakistan. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has reportedly been pursuing Batala for his alleged role in terror conspiracies linked to BKI, a banned outfit under anti-terror laws in India, the US, UK, Canada, and the European Union.
According to sources cited in the report, Batala’s arrest marks a significant advance in India's effort to dismantle overseas Khalistani cells that have been accused of fueling militancy in Punjab through arms smuggling and targeted violence.
India’s move to bring Batala back comes shortly after reports emerged that another Khalistani fugitive, Happy Passia, is likely to be extradited soon from the U.S. If Batala is successfully brought to India, it would mark the second major extradition of a Khalistani terror suspect from American soil in recent months, indicating a deepening counter-terror partnership between New Delhi and Washington.
Both extradition efforts fall under the India-U.S. extradition framework that allows the legal transfer of wanted individuals for prosecution or sentencing.
The NIA has filed charges linking Batala to a broader conspiracy led by another BKI operative, Jatinder Singh alias Joti. Jatinder was arrested in Mumbai in December 2024 and is accused of sourcing illegal weapons from Madhya Pradesh, later channeled to Batala’s network in Punjab.
Investigators also suspect Batala’s involvement in a grenade attack on a police post in Amritsar earlier this year, states the News18 report.
Early this June, the NIA conducted raids at 15 locations across Punjab and Haryana, including Amritsar, Pathankot, Ferozepur, Kapurthala, and Sirsa, as part of the probe into the resurgence of pro-Khalistan violence.
Babbar Khalsa International has been at the core of the Khalistan movement and is known to operate through a complex network spanning North America, Europe, and South Asia. Indian intelligence agencies have long alleged that Pakistan provides covert support to BKI operatives to stoke unrest in Punjab.
