Julana election results live: Vinesh Phogat wins her first electoral bout, prevails over BJP rival

Olympic medallist Bajrang Punia congratulated wrestler Vinesh Phogat on her victory in her debut elections. In a heartfelt message on X (formerly Twitter), he wrote, “Many congratulations to the country's daughter Vinesh Phogat for her victory. This fight was not just for one Julana seat, nor was it just against a few candidates or political parties. It was a battle against some of the most oppressive forces in the country, and Vinesh has emerged victorious."

Vinesh Phogat won the election with a total of 65,080 votes, securing a margin of 6,015 votes.

After the 14th round of counting, Congress candidate Vinesh Phogat is ahead by 5,909 votes in Haryana's Julana constituency. BJP's candidate, Yogesh Bairagi, is trailing. Both Phogat and Bairagi are contesting their first-ever assembly election, making this a crucial moment in their political careers.

Vinesh Phogat is now ahead of her BJP rival, Yogesh Bairagi, by a margin of 6,050 votes. If the trends hold, she could clinch her maiden election. Eleven rounds of counting have concluded.

After the conclusion of 9th round of counting, Vinesh Phogat is ahead of BJP's Bairagi by a margin of over 4,000 votes. This is the first assembly election for both Phogat and Bairagi.

As per the official trends released by the Election Commission of India, Congress candidate Vinesh Phogat is trailing from Julana seat. BJP’s Yogesh Kumar is leading from the seat with a margin of over 1,400 votes compared to Vinesh.

According to the latest EC trends, BJP's Yogesh Bairagi is still ahead of Vinesh Phogat after three rounds of counting. However, the margin is not that high and the election may go down to the wire.

BJP's Yogesh Bairagi has now taken a lead over Congress candidate Vinesh Phogat in Julana. He is ahead by a margin of 2,128 votes, as per EC trends. AAP's Kavita Rani is at a distant 5th position.

The JJP candidate and incumbent Amarjeet Dhanda is banking on the work done by him in the constituency to stay in power. Before the elections, the JJP leader said that is available round-the-clock for the people of Julana. He also dismissed any threat from Phogat.

Though Phogat projected herself as the 'bahu' (daughter-in-law) of Julana, her opponent Kavita Dalal said would like to seek votes as its 'beti' (daughter). The 37-year-old said that she will raise Julana's voice in the Haryana assembly if the people ensure her victory.

The CWG medalist is now leading from Julana after first round of counting.

For Phogat, the election here is a matter of prestige since her in-laws hail from Julana. The wrestler-turned-politician had said that she will try and live up to the expectations of people. "They treated me more as a daughter than a daughter-in-law," Phogat had said earlier.

Regional parties have traditionally dominated the elections in Julana. Except Congress's Sher Singh Sehrawat, who represented the constituency from 200 to 2009, Julana has favoured parties like Haryana Vikas Party, INLD and now JJP. INLD's Parminder Singh Dull represented the seat from 2009 to 2019. JJP's Amarjeet Dhanda won the contest here in 2019.

BJP fielded commercial pilot Yogesh Bairagi as its candidate in Julana, who has served as a Captain in the Indian Army for nine years. He subsequently moved to the aviation industry. A non-Jat candidate, Bairagi is a strategic gamble for BJP in the high-profile seat. He is currently the vice president of Haryana BJP's youth wing Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) and co-convenor of the BJP Sports cell.

Representing the AAP, Kavita Dalal, also known as Lady Khali, is the first Indian woman wrestler to compete in the WWE. With a strong background in sports, she seeks to make her mark in Haryana politics.

Even before she stepped into the Haryana poll fray, Phogat was already making headlines for her dream run in the Paris Olympics which came to an abrupt halt after she failed to make weight before her final bout. The Commonwealth Games gold medalist was assured of at least a silver and was hoping to win a historic Gold. She announced her retirement after she was disqualified from the Olympics. Shortly after returning to India, she got inducted into the Congress party after a meeting with Rahul Gandhi.
