Haryana's Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Y Puran Kumar reportedly shot himself at his residence in Sector 11, Chandigarh, on Tuesday.
Who was Y Puran Kumar?
Media reports said that IPS Y Puran Kumar has served in several key positions in the Police Department and was promoted to the rank of Additional Director General of Police (ADGP). He lived in Chandigarh's Sector 11, at his official residence. He also held several administrative posts throughout his career.
He was currently serving at the Police Training Centre (PTC) in Rohtak's Sunaria, where he was posted as Inspector General (IG) on September 29, while he was on leave till October 7. Before this, he was posted as ADG Rohtak.
Media reports also said that Kumar has been involved in an administrative battle because he was raising questions about the promotion policy for Haryana's IPS officers. Reports also said that about a year ago, he had written a letter to Haryana CM Nayab Saini, asking questions about the promotions granted to IPS officers across four batches (1991, 1996, 1997, and 2005).
He had reportedly alleged that these promotions were conducted illegally by overriding Union Home Ministry (MHA) guidelines based solely on the consent of the State Finance Department, reports said.
