Five people were injured after a violent attack broke out during Kannada Rajyotsava celebrations in Karnataka’s Belagavi district, police said on Sunday. The assault, carried out by a group of unidentified miscreants armed with knives and machetes, took place amid a festive procession.
The incident took place near the Lakshmi Complex in Sadashiva Nagar when a group of miscreants emerged from the crowd during the procession and began indiscriminately stabbing people, police confirmed.
Reports said that the attackers suddenly appeared from within the gathering and began targeting people at random before escaping.
The armed assailants reportedly used knives and other sharp weapons, injuring five men before fleeing the scene. The incident occurred under the jurisdiction of the APMC Police Station.
All five victims, Gurunath Vakkund, Sachin Kamble, Lokesh Betageri, Mahesh, Vinayak, and Nazir Pathan, were taken to the Belagavi Institute of Medical Sciences (BIMS) hospital for treatment. Hospital officials said they are being closely monitored as they recover from their injuries.
Following the incident, senior police officers, including City Police Commissioner Bhushan G. Borase, visited BIMS Hospital to meet the injured and take stock of the situation. A police team has been formed to trace the attackers and uncover the motive behind the assault.
Authorities suspect that people from outside the area may have been involved in the attack. Police have launched an investigation and are reviewing available evidence to identify the culprits.
