The rain caused havoc in the capital city just hours after the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert in all parts of Delhi, owing to heavy rainfall and gusty winds, that the weather unit said would reach up to 100 km per hour.
The weather department's red alert also included a forecast of light to moderate rainfall and lightning activity across a vast region encompassing parts of Haryana, western Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Delhi-NCR.
