Amid increased engagement between Bangladeshi and Pakistani military officials, New Delhi, on Friday, stated that it is closely monitoring developments in the region that impact national security and is prepared to take "appropriate" action if necessary.
As per reports, ISI's Director General of Analysis, Maj Gen Shahid Amir Afsar, along with other Pakistani military officials, is visiting Dhaka, currently. This follows a recent tour by Bangladeshi military officials to Pakistan, where they held discussions with Pakistan's three service chiefs.
Commenting on the situation, External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, "We keep an eye on all activities in the region and those affecting national security, and the government will take appropriate steps."
Jaiswal underscored India's commitment to fostering friendly relations with Bangladesh, stating, "We support a democratic, progressive, and inclusive Bangladesh. Our aim is to strengthen bilateral ties for the prosperity of people in both nations."
On Bangladesh's objections to India’s construction of a border fence, Jaiswal clarified that the initiative aims to curb criminal activities like human trafficking and cattle smuggling. He added that the construction is in accordance with existing bilateral agreements.
India-Bangladesh relations have witnessed significant strain since former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled Dhaka in August last year amid widespread anti-government protests. Ties have further deteriorated under the interim administration led by Muhammad Yunus, which has faced criticism for failing to contain violence against minorities, particularly Hindus, in Bangladesh.
