Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, currently detained in Tihar jail over alleged involvement in the Delhi excise policy scam, has requested Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena to allow Cabinet Minister Atishi to hoist the national flag at the city's Independence Day function on August 15.

Kejriwal, facing charges of corruption and money laundering, has communicated his request from jail, as confirmed by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Wednesday. Traditionally, the Delhi government holds its Independence Day celebration at Chhatrasal Stadium, where the Chief Minister addresses the gathering and hoists the tricolour.

This year, Atishi will step in for Kejriwal, marking a significant moment in the annual event. The AAP emphasized that despite Kejriwal's absence, the celebration will proceed with the same fervour and dedication to national pride.
