MNS candidate Amit Thackeray is pitted against Shiv Sena’s Sada Sarvankar. The third candidate is Shiv Sena (UBT)’s Mahesh Sawant. Sarvankar won in 2014 and 2019 assembly elections.

In the 2014 Maharashtra Assembly Elections, Sarvankar defeated MNS candidate Nitin Sardesai with a vote share of 33.97 percent. Sardesai got 40,350 votes.  Sardesai had won in 2009 assembly polls.

Again, in 2019, Sarvankar won this seat with 61,337 votes and a vote share of 49.45 percent. He defeated MNS candidate Sandeep Deshpande, who got 42,690 votes (34.42 percent).

Mahim witnessed a voter turnout of almost 60 percent on November 20.

Nestled by the prestigious Shivaji Park, Mahim houses a mix of upper-class Maharashtrian and a sizeable cosmopolitan and minority vote.

Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) candidate Amit Thackeray and his Shiv Sena rival Sada Sarvankar on Wednesday came face-to-face outside the Siddhivinayak temple in Mumbai where both of them shook hands.

Both of them were among the early voters here as polling was underway on Wednesday for the 288 assembly seats in Maharashtra.

The Mahim assembly constituency has been a bastion of the Shiv Sena since the 1990s. Shiv Sena Bhavan, the party’s headquarters in Dadar, is part of this constituency.

However, in 2009, the seat was won by MNS candidate Nitin Sardesai. Observing MNS's victory in Mahim, some political analysts wrote off Shiv Sena and hailed the MNS as the new Shiv Sena. Indeed, the Shiv Sena faced an existential crisis that year.

Although the MNS was able to win only 13 seats, it led to the defeat of Shiv Sena candidates in several other constituencies due to the division of the Marathi vote. In the following election, the Shiv Sena reclaimed the Mahim seat, with Sada Sarwankar being elected as the MLA. Raj Thackeray's residence, "Shivteerth," and his party headquarters also fall within the Mahim constituency.

There were 25,19,586 voters in the Mahim constituency during the 2019 Assembly Elections. Out of this, 13,55,982 were male and 11,63,374 were female voters. 230 voters belonged to the third gender, as per reports citing Election Commission data.

Mahim is one of the few seats where MNS may play a key role in the Maharashtra Assembly elections 2024. MNS’s Nitin Sardesai won the seat in 2009.
