AIADMK slams PM Modi's remarks on Waqf Act amid buzz over BJP alliance: 'Bulldozing one section of people'

The AIADMK voted against the Bill in Rajya Sabha amid the speculation of its possible alliance with the ruling BJP.

Following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s remarks on the recently passed Waqf Amendment Act 2025, the AIADMK has alleged that the BJP’s “reforms bulldoze" one section of society.

AIADMK spokesperson Kovai Sathyan told News18 that the Indian Constitution has given the right to live to every citizen, irrespective of religion. “What has stopped the BJP from taking stakeholders into confidence in this case of Waqf Amendment of minorities? Whatever so-called reforms the BJP undertakes is perceived as bulldozing a particular section of people," he said.

Speaking at News18’s Rising Bharat Summit 2025 on Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the rights of poor pasmanda Muslims, women, and children will now be safe under the new Waqf law. “Politics of appeasement is not new. Seeds of this appeasement were sown during independence… Two-nation theory wasn’t the decision of the common Muslim. Through the politics of appeasement, Congress got power, some fundamentalist leaders got wealth, but the question is what did the common Muslim get?" the PM said.

The AIADMK voted against the Bill in Rajya Sabha amid the speculation of its possible alliance with the ruling BJP.  Union Home Minister Amit Shah reportedly confirmed that alliance talks are on with the AIADMK for the 2026 Tamil Nadu assembly elections.  AIADMK floor leader M Thambidurai opposed the bill, saying that his party is committed to the welfare of the minorities.

Earlier, Sathyan attacked PM Modif for making ‘tall claims’ on central welfare schemes on concrete houses and the piped water connections in the state.

“We welcome anyone who brings in welfare measures and benefits for the state as well as for the people, but what is surprising is the tall claims made by the Prime Minister on the concrete houses and the piped water connections,” Kovai Sathyan said. “Since DMK came to power, all the beneficiaries have been fake. All the central government-sponsored schemes; beneficiaries are not the real ones... Money worth crores and crores have been swindled... I'm not sure why the BJP is turning a blind eye towards it.”

What do other opposition parties say?

Other Opposition parties, including Congress and Samajwadi Party also slammed the Prime Minister for his remarks during the Rising Bharat address.

Congress MLC from Telangana, Addanki Dayakar, alleged that the Waqf Act divides “not only Hindu and Muslims but also Muslims".

“Modi is the PM of India. He always divides people in the name of religion, region, caste, and gender. Today, he wants to divide the Muslims," he told News18 The SP, on the other hand, said that India is “sinking" under the BJP government. “India is sinking, not rising under BJP’s leadership. You cannot drown 25 crore Muslims in the Indian Ocean. You cannot take over Shia Imambaras, mosques, and graveyards through black laws," SP spokesperson Ameeq Jamei told News18.

The BJP has also formed a panel comprising Anil Antony, Jamal Siddiqui, Radhamohan Das Agrawal and Dushyant Gautam to oversee the series of programmes that will be undertaken by the party to spread the message on benefits of the Waqf Act for the Muslims.
