Australia's Glenn Maxwell on Tuesday created history by becoming the first to deliver an astonishing double century in the match against Afghanistan in the ICC Men's ODI World Cup 2023.
According to ESPN Cricket Info, despite suffering injuries, Maxwell became the first to score an ODI 200 while batting at number 3 or lower.
Taking place at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, the match had Australia chase a target of 292 runs set by Afghanistan - the highest chased by Australia in the men's ODI.
Maxwell started off his innings with a hat-track ball and eventually scored 201 runs off 128 balls with 21 fours and 10 sixes: Most runs after the fall of the 7th wicket in the history of ODI.
The 202-run partnership between Maxwell and Pat Cummins marked the highest in the history of ODIs. This incredible innings not only led to Australia's victory over Afghanistan but also secured their place in the World Cup semi-finals.
Reacting to Maxwell's record-breaking strike, Sachin Tendulkar called it "one of the best ODI knocks he had seen in his life."
"A wonderful knock by @IZadran18 to put Afghanistan in a good position. They started well in the 2nd half and played good cricket for 70 overs but the last 25 overs from @Gmaxi_32 was more than enough to change their fortune. From Max pressure to Max performance! This has been the best ODI knock I’ve seen in my life," Tendulkar said on X.
