LED streetlights to save up to 50% energy: Piyush Goyal

Goyal said there is demand from many of the states for changing to streetlights to LEDs as there is 50 percent saving in energy consumption.

The Union Minister for Power and Coal Piyush Goyal on Monday said that national rollout of LED replacement program has resulted in major reduction in prices and rates of LED bulbs.

Speaking to media, Goyal said there is demand from many states to change streetlights to LEDs as there is 50 percent saving in energy consumption.  While the Mumbai Municipal Corporation is currently saving Rs 36 lakh per year, a 50 percent saving for entire city is expected to save Rs 8 crore for a full year for the local body.

He said that a government company Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) had replaced street bulbs with LED lamps in six cities including Vishakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh. As a result, the Andhra Chief Minister had asked for replacement of entire streetlights in the state, he added. Goyal further said that process has been undertaken at the initiative of the states in a transparent, honest and good rates have been obtained due to the electronic bidding process followed.

He said that it was planned to complete replacement to LEDs in Mumbai by Dussehra this year.
