Sensex Today| Dilip Parmar – Senior Research Analyst, HDFC Securities.

The rupee experienced its most significant single-day gain since November 11, 2022. This upward movement was primarily fueled by a weaker U.S. dollar and a strong performance in the domestic equity market. Additionally, the central bank's efforts to encourage foreign investment in corporate bonds, providing short-duration liquidity, further bolstered the rupee's appreciation. Looking ahead, the spot USDINR is expected to find support at 84.94 and face resistance at 86.15.

Sensex Today| Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Investments

The domestic market has recouped nearly half of the week’s losses, supported by gains in FMCG and IT stocks. FMCG benefitted from the early and above-normal monsoon forecast, while IT stocks saw a rebound following a healthy correction. Optimism around a potentially record-high dividend from the RBI is boosting hopes for fiscal consolidation, reflected in falling Indian bond yields. Investor attention is further revolving around US-India trade talks and strong domestic macroeconomic indicators. However, recent FII outflows, driven by rising US bond yields amid concerns over mounting US debt, may weigh on the market sentiment.

Sensex Today|  Prasanna Pathak, Managing Partner, The Wealth Company

The temporary easing of US-China tariffs has given a much needed breather to global markets, driving broad-based gains across sectors from metals to technology. This development is particularly beneficial for industries most exposed to trade tensions. However, while near-term sentiment has improved, investors should maintain a measured perspective. Persistent inflationary pressures, uncertain rate trajectories, and the need for earnings validation remain key considerations. In this environment, we advocate a balanced approach: selectively participating in cyclical opportunities while maintaining allocations to high-quality defensive positions. Market optimism should be met with disciplined investing—short-term rallies notwithstanding, sustainable wealth creation remains a long-term endeavour.

Sensex Today| Rupak De, Senior Technical Analyst at LKP Securities

The index has moved higher after finding support at the 21-day EMA. Broadly speaking, the Nifty appears to be consolidating within the range of 24,700–25,000. The short-term trend remains positive, with momentum likely to strengthen above 25,000. A decisive breakout above this level could give the bulls an upper hand and potentially trigger a rally towards 25,250–25,350. On the downside, the index has support at 24,700; a break below this level could attract bearish bets.

May 23, 2025· 15:54 IST

Sensex Today| Ajit Mishra – SVP, Research, Religare Broking

Markets witnessed some respite on the final trading day of the week, gaining nearly a percent amid mixed cues. After a flat start, the Nifty saw a noticeable surge during the early hours of trade, followed by a range-bound move till the close. It eventually settled at 24,853, up by 0.99%.All key sectors, except pharma, contributed to the up move, with FMCG, financials, and IT emerging as the top gainers. The broader indices also advanced, gaining over half a percent each.

The rebound reflects positive sentiment despite mixed global cues, as participants are using dips to accumulate quality stocks across sectors. Technically, the recovery after retesting the crucial short-term support level — the 20-day exponential moving average (20 DEMA) — has eased some pressure. The outlook could improve further with renewed strength in the banking and financial sectors after their consolidation phase. We maintain our view of adopting a “buy on dips” strategy, with a focus on selective stock picking, unless the Nifty decisively breaks below the 24,500 mark.

Sensex Today| Shrikant Chouhan, Head Equity Research, Kotak Securities:

The Nifty-50 Index and Sensex each lost around 0.75% each in the past week. While midcap (-0.45%) and small cap (+1%) index outperformed during the same period. Global equities remained mix on expectations of a steady ramp-down of US tariffs. Moody’s downgrade of the US credit outlook and renewed fiscal concerns in major economies, coupled with mixed economic cues from China, kept the markets on edge.

Sector-wise, most indices ended in red with Consumer Durable (-1.9%), IT (-0.9%), Auto (-1.7%), FMCG (-0.8%), Oil and gas (-0.6%) and Power (-0.2%) sectors as major sectoral losers. While sectors including Capital goods (+0.5%), Real Estate (+2.4%) and Metal (+0.6%) reported gains for the week. Bank Nifty ended flat. Within the Nifty, BEL (+5.9%), HDFC Life (+3.9%) and Tata Steel (+3.4)  gained the most, while Grasim (-4.6%), M&M (-3.9%) and Maruti Suzuki (-3.9%) lost the most. The Q4FY25 earnings season remains uninspiring, with aggregate earnings growth of the Nifty-50 Index at 5.8% yoy till now. Both DIIs and FIIs were net buyers during the week.

In International, the 30-year Treasury bond yield touched a high of 5.161%, its highest level since October 2023. The rate on the 10-year Treasury note at one point breached 4.6%. UK retail sales jump by 1.2% in April — beating expectations. Japan’s core inflation climbs to 3.5%, highest in more than 2 years.

Manav Modi, Senior Analyst, Commodity Research at Motilal Oswal on gold prices

"Gold prices slipped, posting their first daily loss in three sessions, as a stronger U.S. dollar, updates on President trump’s tax bill and investor profit-taking weighed on the metal. Earlier in the day, gold had touched a two-week high, but gains quickly faded as the dollar index rose 0.3%, against major crosses. Surge in dollar followed the narrow passage of President Donald Trump’s sweeping tax bill through the U.S. House of Representatives, a move that reignited concerns over the country’s ballooning fiscal deficit."

Sensex Today| VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, Geojit Investments Views Market Losing Steam Amid FII Pullback and Global Yield Spike

After the 14 percent pull back from the March lows the market is struggling to find direction. It appears that the sustained FII buying which played the important role in this rally has run out of steam. The big FII selling on 20th and 22nd of this month indicates that the FIIs may again turn sellers if the global environment turns unfavourable. There are some global concerns arising out of the sharp rise in bond yields in US and Japan. Particularly the sharp spike in US bond yields with the 30-year yield touching 5.14 % and the 10-year yield at 4.52% reflect concerns surrounding the US debt levels and its fall out on global financial markets. It remains to be seen how this pans out.

The silver lining from the market perspective is India’s strong macros particularly the resilient growth and declining inflation and interest rates. Even when the market turns weak domestic demand driven segments like financials, telecom, aviation etc are resilient and this is reflected in the strength in the stock prices of the big boys in these segments like ICICI Bank, Bharti Airtel and Interglobe Aviation. This message from the market is important

Sensex Today| Akshay Chinchalkar, Head of Research, Axis Securities, Views Nifty at Crucial Support; Close Above 24,946 Key for Bulls

The Nifty ended 204 points lower yesterday, closing at the all-important 24610 level. Technically speaking, yesterday's recovery has traced a candle with a long lower shadow and took support at the lows from last Thursday's candle, when the Nifty ended above 25k. Support lies between here and all the way down till 24050, where the 200-day average sits. On the upside, bulls need a close above Wednesday's high of 24946 to eliminate the risk of a bigger drop. Speaking macros, the volatility seen in the US and Japanese bond markets remains a key headwind.

Sensex Today| SBI Securities Research: Expect a flat to positive start for our market today

The benchmark equity indices yesterday closed lower as Nifty 50 dropped over 200 points amid weak global cues and heavy FII selling. The broader markets however marginally outperformed, but the breadth was largely in the favour of declines. FIIs net sold Rs 5,045 cr while DIIs net bought Rs 3,715 cr in the cash market yesterday.

The US equity market overnight ended mixed. While the Dow and the S&P 500 closed on a flat note, Nasdaq closed with gain of 0.3%. The dollar index continues to trade below the 100 level while 30 year treasury yield jumped to highest since Oct 2023 at 5.2% on the backdrop of ballooning US deficits weighing on the sentiment in the US bond market. In US, House members approved the bill that includes lower taxes and additional military spending which could further raise the US government debt. The Asian markets are currently trading on a positive note and hence expect a flat to positive start for our market today.

Sensex Today| Prashant Tapse says Nifty eyes consolidation with positive bias amid eased global pressures

In yesterday’s session, Nifty came under pressure but showed resilience with bargain hunting at lower levels, ultimately closing off its intraday lows. This Friday morning, Gift Nifty is trading steady, hinting at likely consolidation with a positive bias. Encouragingly, the selling pressure from global cues—mainly driven by rising U.S. Treasury yields and fiscal concerns—seems to have eased. As long as Nifty holds above its key support at 24,386, the intraday bias remains neutral to positive with immediate upside targets at 25,000. Key stock-specific action today includes Sun Pharma's Q4 profit drop, ITC’s sharp gain from a one-time exceptional item, and momentum in TTML on news of potential capital infusion. Watch for Q4 results from Ashok Leyland, BEML, Glenmark, GNFC, and JSW Steel. FIIs were net sellers by Rs. 5,045 crore, while DIIs bought Rs. 3,715 crore. Trading ideas: bullish bias on Nifty and Bank Nifty with aggressive targets, and ABB stands out as a strong interweek buy on oversold signals.

Currency Check| Anil Kumar Bhansali: Rupee Dips to 86.1175 as Stop-Losses Triggered; Exporters Should Sell on Dollar Upticks

The Indian rupee weakened to a low of 86.1175 after breaching the 85.70 mark, triggering stop-loss orders. The demand for the U.S. dollar is being driven largely by foreign portfolio investors (FPIs), oil companies, and select government and defence-related payments. Despite the dip, fundamentals remain supportive, with India's recent Services PMI exceeding expectations, reinforcing a continued strategy to sell the dollar. The rupee is expected to trade within a range of 85.75–86.25 today, with exporters advised to sell on dollar upticks, while importers should remain vigilant for favorable levels. The rupee opened the day at approximately 85.94.
