Stargazers in the Southern Hemisphere are in for a rare treat this September. On the 21st, the last solar eclipse of 2025 will unfold just before the equinox. How will this celestial event appear across the region, and can it be seen safely?

Where Will the Eclipse Be Visible?

The partial solar eclipse will cover New Zealand, Antarctica and parts of the South Pacific. Observers in southern New Zealand and Antarctic research stations will see the moon cover much of the sun. For instance, Auckland will experience a 60% eclipse, while Christchurch sees 69%. Invercargill will witness up to 72%, and Wellington 66%. Will island nations get a good view? Tonga will observe a 32% eclipse, Fiji 27%, Cook Islands 23% and Samoa 17%.

In Antarctica, eclipse coverage varies widely. Marambio Base experiences just 5%, Mario Zucchelli Station sees 72%, and McMurdo Station 69%. Ross Ice Shelf will have about 65% eclipse, while the Antarctic Peninsula sees only 12% as the sun sets.
