Finnish telecom gear maker Nokia Networks today said it has won a contract from Tata Docomo for expanding the operator's 3G network in Karnataka, Haryana and Punjab.

The company, however, did not share financial details of the deal.

"Due to the steep growth in mobile broadband traffic, the operator has modernised its 3G network based on Nokia Networks' single RAN (radio access network) product and services," Nokia said in a statement.

As part of the deal, Nokia will provide Tata Docomo network planning and optimisation, project management services as well as hardware and software support to ensure a smooth network roll out, the statement said.

As per Nokia MBiT Index report, 3G usage in India grew by 156 percent year-on-year in 2013, higher than the world's average. On an average, consumption on 3G (532MB/month/user) grew in India by almost 100 MB in 2013. However, 3G coverage in India as identified by the report is limited.
