Asking for judicial custody of the five accused persons who are yet to be arrested, the Central Bureau of Investigation on Friday told the 2G trial court that there was a likelihood that the accused would abscond.

The accused include Sanjay Chandra of Unitech, Vinod Goenka of DB Realty as well as Gautam Doshi, Surendra Pipara and Hari Nair of Reliance ADA.

The CBI said that it suspected possibility of influencing the witnesses clearly and the detention of accused will facilitate smooth trial.

The defence lawyers, however, maintained that sending the accused to judicial custody after filing of the chargesheet by CBI would amount to punishment. Maintaining that the CBI used usual standard phrases to make a case for judicial custody, the defence lawyers in the case asked how can the custody of the accused speed up trial.
