Powered by DZire and Ertiga, Maruti June sales rise 20% YoY
Maruti Suzuki bucked the slowdown that has hit India's automakers, with total sales rising 20% year-on-year to 96,597 units in June, helped by continued strong demand for its DZire compact sedan and Ertiga multi-utility vehicle.

Maruti Suzuki bucked the slowdown that has hit India's automakers, with total sales rising 20% year-on-year to 96,597 units in June, helped by continued strong demand for its DZire compact sedan and Ertiga multi-utility vehicle.The country's largest passenger car maker saw its domestic sales rise 19% to 83,531 units, while exports were up 27% to 13,066 units last month.Maruti also gained from a low base effect as sales in June 2011 were impacted due to a workers strike at its plant in Manesar. A sharp rise in petrol prices has hurt sales of passenger cars in the mini segment, which includes A-Star, WagonR, Alto and 800. However the company has had phenomenonal success with the Ertiga MUV launched in April and the Swift hatchback and DZire launched last financial year. The diesel models of these cars in particular have a waiting list of up to six months.Maruti's mini car sales slipped 10% to 34,198 units in June. But compact car sales, which includes Swift, Ritz and Estilo were up 39% to 22,624 units.DZire saw a five-fold increase in sales last months to 13,741 units, while utility vehicle sales led by the Ertiga jumped from 185 units in June 2011 to 5,638 units in June 2012.Among other segments, sales of Maruti Suzuki's SX-4 mid-size sedan were down 43% year-on-year to 408 units, van sales were down 43% to 6,916 units and it only sold 6 units of the Kizashi in the executive segment.Overall for the April-June quarter, Maruti Suzuki sold 2,95,896 units, up 5% from a year ago. Exports in the three-month period were up 6%, while domestic sales rose 5%.Maruti Suzuki shares were up 2% at 1,196.50 on NSE post the announcement in morning trade.
