JJ Irani says strong chemistry between Tata & Cyrus Mistry

JJ Irani, former director of Tata Sons feels Cyrus Mistry is the right man for the job as the Chairman of India's top conglomerate.


"He [Mistry] has been on the board of Tata Sons for five years now and whenever we were at board meetings together, I have been very impressed by his serious, his thorough and his financial insights," he told CNBC-TV18.

Q: As far as the checklist is concerned, if you look at the age factor, he clearly has age on his side. He is not an outsider as we have been talking about. He has been on the board of the Tata Sons since the time that he was 38. Do you think he is the best man for the job?


A: He is a very appropriate person. Mr Ratan Tata always wanted a young person as his successor and I think the selection committee has done a very admirable job in selecting him. As far as his capability is concerned, I think he has been on the board of Tata Sons for five years now and whenever we were at board meetings together, I have been very impressed by his serious, his thorough and his financial insights.


I had noticed that Mr Tata took a lot of pain to get his advice at board meetings and there was very strong chemistry between the two. The selection committee has come to a correct decision.


Q: You are saying that there was a very strong chemistry between Cyrus Chemistry and Ratan Tata. That he is very insightful specially when it comes to financial matters and that Ratan Tata would sort of lean on him perhaps during board meetings for his advice on matters. But as far as weighing on the minds of the nominations committee was age and the fact that he belongs to the family that is the largest shareholder. How much did that influence the decision?
