With the Supreme Court issuing notices to 11 telcos for failing to meet spectrum roll-out deadlines, the Cellular Operator's Association (COAI) has now stepped in.
According to COAI director general Rajan Mathews canceling the licenses would be a "very harsh" step and at best, fines should be levied for roll-out shortfall. In fact, the COAI claimed that in some cases, the roll-out delay was due to external factors and telcos should be given a chance to explain their to inability to roll-out services on time. The Supreme Court on Monday asked 11 firms why their licences should not be revoked, adding to regulatory uncertainty in the sector. The companies include Etisalat, Unitech Wireless Group, Loop Telecom, Videocon Telecommunications, S-Tel, Alliance Infratech, Idea Cellular, Tata Teleservices, Sistema Shyam, Aircel, and Vodafone Essar.
