The Competition Commission of India (CCI) said on September 13 that it has appointed Management Development Institute Society (MDIS) to conduct a comprehensive Market Study on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its impact on competition. It said this decision follows the issuance of a Request for Proposal (RFP) in April of this year, with an agreement between CCI and MDIS signed on September 9, 2024.
The Market Study aims to address several key areas:
-The study will explore various AI systems, their market structures, and ecosystems. This includes identifying key AI actors, essential resources, value chains, and competitive parameters.
-It will investigate emerging and potential competition issues within AI markets and ecosystems, assessing any possible impacts on market dynamics.
-The scope of AI applications and use cases will be studied to evaluate associated opportunities, risks, and competition-related ramifications.
-The study will understand the existing and evolving regulatory/legal frameworks governing AI systems and applications in India and other major jurisdictions.
-Relevant stakeholders will be consulted to gain a holistic understanding of the intersection between AI and competition, ensuring that all perspectives are considered.
-The study will analyze trends in AI and help determine the Commission's enforcement and advocacy priorities regarding AI and its market applications.
