The Italian luxury fashion house recently showcased sandals in their Spring/Summer collection that closely resemble India’s iconic Kolhapuri chappals. After being called out for overlooking the craft’s heritage, Prada has finally admitted to taking inspiration from traditional Indian footwear.

It all kicked off when Prada unveiled its new line of leather sandals, which looked very much similar to the handcrafted Kolhapuri chappals that Indian artisans have been making for generations. With no mention of the craft’s origin, social media users were quick to point out the glaring oversight.

Hashtags like #SupportLocal and #NotYourKolhapuri took over Instagram and Twitter, calling for fair credit and sparking conversations about cultural appropriation in global fashion.
