Mamta Kulkarni, a yesteryear actress known for her roles in iconic films like Waqt Hamara Hain, Krantiveer, Karan Arjun, and Sabse Bada Khiladi, has made headlines recently after being appointed as the Mahamandaleshwar of the Kinnar Akhara, only to be removed later due to internal disputes within the community. Mamta, who gained fame in the 80s and 90s, was also recognized for her candid and bold remarks on a range of topics during interviews. In one memorable conversation, she took aim at actresses Raveena Tandon and Pooja Bhatt, criticizing the influence of nepotism in the industry.
In a throwback interview with Lehren, which is doing rounds of the internet again, Mamta Kulkarni reflected on her Bollywood journey and how she carved her path in the industry without any external support. While acknowledging that she came from a financially secure family, which shielded her from early struggles, Mamta made it clear that unlike actresses Raveena Tandon and Pooja Bhatt, who had their fathers—Ravi Tandon and Mahesh Bhatt—guiding them, she had to navigate the industry on her own.
Despite not having any industry backing, she was able to establish herself and thrive in Hindi cinema. "I didn’t have a filmy background. Aapne ye sawal pucha mere paas filmy background bilkul nahi thi. Like today there are there’s Raveena, she got a father, and Pooja (Pooja Bhatt) has a father. Then particularly kaisey baat karna hain. Ye sab kisi ne mujhe sikhaya nahin. I learnt on my own," she said.
Mamta Kulkarni further mentioned that when she first entered the industry, she had no knowledge of which producers were considered top-tier or not. She navigated the industry and learned these distinctions on her own over time.
Mamta also discussed how having support and backing in the industry can make a significant difference, making things easier for celebrities. She mentioned renowned actresses like Rekha and Sridevi, referring to them as "cosmetic beauties," highlighting the role of external influences in their success.

She said, "First thing, you have to have a face. Some women don't have it. There were Sri (devi) and Rekha, who were totally cosmetic beauties, but they made it through somebody. Unke peechay koi tha, mere peechay koi nahi tha."
Mamta Kulkarni, renowned not only for her acting but also for her exceptional dancing skills, made a lasting impact with a series of unforgettable hit songs like "Jankaro Jankaro," "Bhangda Pale," and "Bholi Bhali Ladki." She made her exit from Bollywood in the early 2000s, with her last appearance being in the 2002 film Kabhie Tum Kabhie Hum. Since then, the iconic actress has largely remained out of the public eye.
