Amitabh Bachchan, an undisputed legend of Indian cinema, has captivated audiences for over five decades with his powerful performances. Loved across generations, he continues to reign over the silver screen.

However, despite his towering success, Bachchan once faced a severe financial crisis when his production house, Amitabh Bachchan Corporation Limited (ABCL), went bankrupt, leaving him with nearly Rs 90 crore in debt. The situation was so dire that his son, Abhishek Bachchan, had to return from his studies abroad to support the family. Adding to the struggles, none of Amitabh’s films were performing well at the box office during that turbulent period.

Abhishek Bachchan dropped out of University

In an earlier interview with Ranveer Allahbadia, Abhishek reflected upon the tough times that his family had to go through once financially. "Truth be told, I left university — I was studying in Boston University… I left my education because my father was going through this really rough time, financially. He had started this business called ABCL," the Be Happy actor said.

Amitabh Bachchan once recalled in an interview with India Today that the financial crisis he faced was among the darkest phases of his 44-year-long career. He described the harrowing experience of creditors arriving at his doorstep, issuing threats, using abusive language, and even attempting to seize his residence, Prateeksha.

Bachchan Family's Financial trouble

Determined to rise above these hardships, Bachchan took drastic measures to clear his debts, including selling his Juhu house and other properties in Mumbai. With no money left to even afford a driver, he once walked to filmmaker Yash Chopra’s house, covering his head with a monkey cap to avoid being recognized.

Amitabh Bachchan's comeback

When he asked for work, Yash Chopra immediately offered him a signed cheque, but Amitabh refused to accept financial aid, insisting that he would take money only in exchange for work. This moment marked a turning point in his career, as Chopra cast him in Mohabbatein. Shortly after, he also became the host of Kaun Banega Crorepati, paving the way for his resurgence in the industry.

Following his resurgence, Amitabh Bachchan reclaimed his stardom with impactful performances in films like Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Baghban, and several other successful projects, solidifying his position as one of Bollywood’s most revered actors.

Meanwhile, on the professional front, Amitabh Bachchan was last seen portraying Ashwatthama in Kalki 2898 AD. His son, Abhishek Bachchan, is currently making waves with his latest project, Be Happy, which is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
