Fawad Khan and Mahira Khan’s The Legend of Maula Jatt is all set for its India release, marking the first Pakistani film in over a decade to hit Indian theaters. However, the highly anticipated action-drama will be released exclusively only in Punjab and not nationwide, on October 2, 2024.
The producer of the Punjabi film, Nadeem Mandviwalla, recently spoke to India Today and announced limited streaming availability. He expressed optimism about the film's box office success in India.
The producer said, "Thus, it has a great chance to become a huge hit. It might take a little time as the film is releasing after two years and the excitement is no longer there as it was in 2022, during its original release. However, the word of mouth of the film is bound to create that excitement again."
According to India Today, the performance of The Legend of Maula Jatt in Punjab will be a crucial indicator of how Pakistani films are currently received in India. A positive response might pave the way for a broader release in other regions.
A source told the media house that while there have been positive signs in the exchange of content and actors between the two countries, significant progress will take time. To avoid controversy and negativity, the team decided to focus on a targeted release in Punjab. “Apart from security issues, the team also wants to avoid any kind of controversy or negativity. With a market in Punjab, they felt it was the perfect positioning for the film to be released there as of now," the source stated.
For the inversed, The Legend of Maula Jatt, a remake of the 1979 Pakistani original, became the highest-grossing Pakistani film upon its release in 2022. The film features Hamza Ali Abbasi, Humaima Malik, and Faris Shafi, among other notable actors.
