Ajay Devgn’s long-awaited sequel Son of Sardaar 2 hit cinemas on Friday (August 1) and opened to an encouraging response at the Indian box office.
As per early estimates reported by a trading website, the film earned approximately ₹6.75 crore net on its first day, marking a promising start amid stiff competition.
Also starring Mrunal Thakur in the lead, Son of Sardaar 2 saw an overall Hindi occupancy rate of 22.56% on its opening day. Audience turnout steadily improved as the day progressed, with night shows witnessing the highest footfall at 40.27%.
The film began on a quieter note with just 10.24% occupancy in morning shows, which rose to 17.88% in the afternoon and reached 21.84% by evening. The upward trend suggests positive word-of-mouth could give the film a healthy boost over the weekend.
The release of Son of Sardaar 2 coincided with Dhadak 2, featuring Siddhant Chaturvedi and Triptii Dimri. However, Ajay Devgn’s action-comedy clearly took the lead, as Dhadak 2 managed to rake in only around ₹3 crore on its first day.
Both films are also competing against recently released titles such as Saiyaara and Mahavatar Narsimha, further intensifying the box office race.
A follow-up to the 2012 film Son of Sardaar, the sequel arrives more than a decade after the original, which famously faced off with Shah Rukh Khan’s Jab Tak Hai Jaan and still found success. With Son of Sardaar 2, the makers hope to recapture that same magic.
Directed by Vijay Kumar Arora—making his Bollywood debut after a string of acclaimed Punjabi films—the sequel sees Ajay Devgn return as the spirited Jassi. Mrunal Thakur stars as the female lead, while the ensemble cast includes Ravi Kishan, Sanjay Mishra, Neeru Bajwa, Deepak Dobriyal, Chunky Panday, and Kubbra Sait.
Though critical reception has been mixed, The Free Press Journal gave the film a favourable 3.5-star rating, calling it “a hilarious film that will surely tickle your funny bone.” All eyes are now on how the film performs over the weekend.
