Legendary screen idol turned director and activist Robert Redford passed away at age 89.
The chief executive of the publicity firm Rogers & Cowan PMK, Cindi Berger, confirmed the news of his death to The New York Times on Tuesday. He reportedly died in his sleep at his home in Utah early Tuesday morning. Cindi didn’t reveal the cause of his death. Tributes started pouring in soon after his news of death was announced.
Robert Redford won an Oscar for directing Ordinary People. He later became a godfather of independent film as the founder of the Sundance Film Institute. He founded the Sundance Film Festival in Utah in 1978 to promote independent movies. The film festival has now become one of the most influential independent film gatherings in the world.
Hollywood’s most enduring icons were known for classics like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, All the President’s Men, The Way We Were, The Sting, and Three Days of the Condor.

Robert Redford was also part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He portrayed villain Secretary Alexander Pierce in Avengers: Endgame, which marked his most recent on-screen credit. He shared the screen with other Marvel veterans such as Michael Douglas and Tilda Swinton.
For the unversed, Robert Redford made his feature film debut with the 1962 film War Hunt. He appeared with another young actor, Pollack, who would eventually direct Robert Redford in seven movies, also including Out of Africa and The Electric Horseman.

Robert Redford is survived by his wife Sibylle Szaggars, two children, and several grandchildren.
