Huntr/x is ready to set the stage again. Sony and Netflix are officially in early talks to develop a sequel to KPop Demon Hunters, the animated phenomenon that stormed Netflix this summer and rewrote streaming history.
The original film pulled off a rare trifecta: it dethroned Red Notice on Netflix’s all-time charts, crossing a staggering 236 million views, landed four songs on the Billboard Hot 100’s Top 10 at once, and even topped the U.S. box office during a two-day sing-along theatrical run in late August. All of that from a movie that runs just 85 minutes. No wonder executives are scrambling to lock in part two.
Netflix, which usually resists theaters, had to cave for this one, rolling out special screenings in over 1,700 North American locations. Fans showed up, and the movie outgrossed long-running summer titles like Weapons and Freakier Friday.
Meanwhile, merch plans are moving faster than ever—Netflix is already building KPop Demon Hunters experiences into its new in-person stores launching in Philadelphia and Dallas this holiday season.
Behind the scenes, Sony is in negotiations with co-directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans to return. Kang herself teased the possibilities in a chat with Variety: “This was Rumi’s story, and we have backstories for Zoey and Mira that we couldn’t fit in. We’ve set up so much potential.” In short, the sequel could expand the mythology beyond the group’s fiery lead vocalist.
Nothing is locked yet, for now, fans will just have to wait and see if Huntr/x gets that encore tour on screen.
