A Mumbai-based businessman ended his life by allegedly jumping off the Bandra-Worli Sea Link in the wee hours of Wednesday. The deceased, identified as Amit Chopra, lived in Andheri (west) with his wife and son.

Police were quoted by The Indian Express as saying that the 47-year-old was in a taxi and asked the driver to stop at sea-link. He shouted about snake bite and jumped into the sea. Later, his body was found at seashore near Juhu in the jurisdiction of the Santacruz police station.

According to the police, Chopra, originally from Jodhpur in Rajasthan, ran an imitation jewellery business and took the drastic step as his business was doing well, but it could be confirmed only after a detailed inquiry. The police have not found any note from his possession or his residence.

The incident occurred around 1.30 am on Wednesday. Chopra boarded the taxi from Andheri and once he reached sea-link via Bandra, he started shouting that he had been bitten by a snake and asked the driver to stop the taxi. Soon after the driver stopped, Chopra opened the door and jumped from the sea-link, a police officer of the Bandra police station was quoted by The Indian Express as saying.

The taxi driver immediately alerted the security staff at the sea-link about the incident, and the police were also informed.

The Bandra police recorded the statement of the taxi driver and registered a missing person complaint. Later, the body was found around 10 am near Juhu when the fishermen informed the police. The Santacruz police and fire brigade team reached the spot, and the body was sent for post-mortem. The family was informed, and the taxi driver also identified the body as of the same person who jumped off the sea-link, a police officer was quoted as saying.
