Four men wanted in several criminal cases in Bihar were shot dead in an encounter with Delhi Police’s Crime Branch and Bihar Police early Wednesday morning.
The exchange of fire took place around 2.20 am on Bahadur Shah Marg in Delhi’s Rohini area, after police teams intercepted the suspects based on a tip-off about their movements.
According to the police, the men, identified as Ranjan Pathak (25), Bimlesh Mahto (25), Manish Pathak (33), and Aman Thakur (21), belonged to the Sigma Gang, a criminal network involved in extortion and contract killings across Bihar.

When police asked them to stop, the suspects opened fire, forcing the police to retaliate. All four sustained bullet injuries and were taken to Dr BSA Hospital, where doctors declared them dead. At least two to three policemen were also injured in the encounter.
The operation was led by DCP Sanjeev Yadav and conducted jointly by teams from Delhi and Bihar Police.
The Sigma Gang’s Bihar connection
According to the police, Ranjan Pathak, the gang’s leader, carried a reward of Rs 25,000 on his arrest and was wanted in eight criminal cases, including five murders in Sitamarhi and neighbouring districts of Bihar.

The Sigma Gang had been operating for nearly seven years, and had built an extensive network involved in extortion, armed robberies, and contract killings.
As per the police records, Pathak and Mahto faced multiple cases under the Arms Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Aman Thakur was accused of murdering a man named Guddu Thakur, while the number of cases linked to Manish Pathak is still being verified.
The men had allegedly been moving between Delhi and Nepal to evade arrest. Delhi and Bihar Police had been coordinating for weeks to monitor their movements, suspecting that the gang was attempting to regroup in the capital after facing pressure from law enforcement in Bihar.
Pathak’s challenge to police
According to a report by NDTV, Ranjan Pathak had recently issued open challenges to the police through social media and audio messages. In one such clip, Pathak allegedly discussed plans for a major conspiracy ahead of the Bihar Assembly elections.
Following the encounter, police cordoned off the area, and forensic teams collected ballistic evidence from the site. Investigators are now examining the gang’s remaining network and possible links to other organised crime groups operating in northern India.
