The Centre has pegged its food subsidy bill for FY26 at Rs 2.03 lakh crore, marginally higher from the revised estimate of Rs 1.97 lakh crore for the current financial year.

The outlay for food subsidy for FY26, however, is lower than the Budget estimate of Rs 2.05 lakh crore for the current fiscal.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the Budget for the financial year 2025-26 on February 1.

The food subsidy bill, which is the largest component of the country’s subsidy bill, for the next fiscal is 3.04 percent more on-year than the revised estimate for FY25.

The entire food subsidy bill is set to be spent under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana, which was extended by five years in November 2023 at a cost of nearly Rs 12 lakh crore. The food subsidy bill stood at Rs 2.12 lakh crore in 2023-24.

India’s major subsidies consist of food, fertiliser and petroleum and are pegged at Rs 3.83 lakh crore for FY26.
