The country's largest carmaker, Maruti Suzuki India, will launch a new SUV on September 3. While several media reports have claimed that it will be the e Vitara, our sources have told us otherwise.
To make it clear, the Maruti Suzuki e Vitara will not be launched in India on September 3. The carmaker currently offers four SUVs -- Fronx, Brezza, Jimny and Grand Vitara.
Maruti Chairman R C Bhargava confirmed during the Q4 FY25 results press conference that the company will introduce two new SUVs in India in FY26, with one of them being the e Vitara.
He also said that the sales of e Vitara in India will start before the end of September.
However, the shortage of rare earth magnets has hampered Maruti's e Vitara launch plans, pushing it forward. The rare earth magnets are used for producing several important components of EVs, including motors, regenerative braking, electronic sensors, and heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) units.
It is very much possible that the internal combustion engine (ICE)-powered SUV Bhargava referred to during the Q4 FY25 results press conference is being launched on September 3. However, there has been no official communication from Maruti regarding the technical specifications and features of this SUV.
On the other hand, Maruti showcased the production-spec e Vitara at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025. It will be produced at the carmaker's Gujarat plant with planned exports to over 100 countries. The e Vitara will be an export-focused model to start with.
According to the official details shared by Maruti, the e Vitara will come with two battery pack options, 49kWh and 61kWh, having a maximum range of over 500 km on a single full charge.
Based on a completely new Heartect-e platform, the e Vitara will be the maiden Maruti car offering seven airbags and Level 2 ADAS.
An important point to note here is that the e Vitara is not only Maruti's first battery electric vehicle (BEV), but also Suzuki Motor Corporation's maiden electric car.
