Trump Declares Public Safety Emergency In DC – National Guard Deployed!

On August 21, the U.S. National Guard was deployed in Washington, D.C., following President Donald Trump's declaration of a public safety emergency. Trump announced he would personally patrol the streets alongside police and military forces, emphasizing his commitment to reducing crime in the capital. Earlier in August, he had declared a "crime emergency," placing the Metropolitan Police Department under federal control and deploying 800 National Guard troops. Since the beginning of the operation on August 7, federal authorities have arrested around 550 individuals. Officials report significant decreases in violent crime and robberies, as well as the removal of numerous homeless encampments. Despite these claims, the federal intervention has sparked criticism and protests, with demonstrators chanting "Free DC" during visits by administration officials. Trump defended his actions against critics who labeled him a dictator, insisting the measures were necessary to restore safety and order in the nation's capital.

Can Nifty Bulls March On For A Sixth Day On Weekly F&O Expiry? Opening Bell Live

The Nifty 50 continues to ride on strong momentum, closing above the key psychological milestone of 25,000 for the very first time. The index added 70 points on August 20, extending its winning streak to a fifth straight session, ahead of the weekly F&O expiry. Technical indicators remain supportive of the bulls, with short-term moving averages pointing higher and analysts suggesting that as long as the index sustains above the 25,000 mark, the near-term upside targets of 25,170 and 25,250 remain in play. On the flip side, 24,850 — the low of Monday’s bullish breakaway gap day — is likely to serve as a strong support zone. However, global cues are turning out to be mixed, and early trends from the GIFT Nifty are hinting at a muted start to the trading day. Among individual stocks, Ultratech, Clean Science, and Vedanta will be in focus, while investors will also be tracking developments as the Finance Minister addresses the Group of Ministers on rate rationalisation. Catch Nandita Khemka on Opening Bell Live as she discusses the market set-up, trading strategies, and stock ideas with Chandan Taparia, Senior Vice President and Head of Derivatives & Technical Research at Motilal Oswal, and Anand K Rathi, Co-Founder of MIRA Money.

The big question now is whether these talks signal a lasting change, or simply cautious progress in a fragile relationship. Stay tuned to Moneycontrol for more global updates.

Beyond Averages: Will the next ratings upgrade take 17 years

Many would say it was only a matter of time after India’s outlook was upgraded to positive two years ago that a ratings upgrade was in the tow. S&P Global Ratings, last week, delivered the much talked about upgrade after a gap of 17 years, underscoring the strength of the Indian economy. But is it too late and will the next one take as much time. Welcome to Beyond Averages, our weekly data podcast where we try to decode the story behind the big numbers and this week we will be talking about S&P’s upgrade and the road ahead. More than the upgrade, it’s the outlook and forecast for India that seem reassuring. S&P expects Indian economy to weather the global uncertainty storm and grow at 6.8 percent starting FY27. The economy is expected to log a 6.5 percent growth this fiscal as per S&P. Moreover, the ratings agency expect debt to come down to below 80 percent and fiscal deficit to fall to 6.6 percent. But does that take us closer to the next upgrade. Not so much, S&P notes that for the next upgrade deficit needs to fall to 6 percent on a structural basis.

Wall Street ends on muted note ahead of Jackson Hole summit, retailers' earnings | 4K

Wall Street's main indexes closed on a subdued note on Monday (August 18), after struggling for direction while investors awaited a raft of corporate earnings reports from major retailers for more signs about the state of the economy and the Federal Reserve's annual symposium in Jackson Hole. Walmart, Home Depot and Target, among others, are set to report results this week and are likely to indicate how trade uncertainty and inflation expectations have affected U.S. consumers. Markets also hope that the Fed's Jackson Hole, Wyoming, conference between August 21 and 23, where Fed Chair Jerome Powell is expected to speak, could offer more clarity on the economic outlook and the central bank's policy framework.

Can Nifty Bulls Finally Break The 25,000 Barrier On A Closing Basis? | Opening Bell Live

The Nifty 50 staged a strong performance on August 18, rising 1 percent on buzz around GST reforms. The index opened with a robust gap-up and is trading above key moving averages, supported by bullish momentum indicators. Experts say as long as it defends the gap between 24,670–24,850, the index could advance toward 25,000 and even 25,250, while the 24,700–24,600 zone remains strong support and 24,337 is seen as the near-term bottom. Global cues remain mixed—Asian markets are cautious with the Nikkei retreating, GIFT Nifty signals a mildly positive start, and Wall Street ended lower ahead of Jackson Hole and retail earnings. Meanwhile, geopolitical headlines are in focus with Zelenskyy signaling readiness for talks with Putin, followed by potential trilateral discussions involving Trump. AI Startup Perplexity Makes Waves With $34.5B Chrome Acquisition Bid | N18G

AI Startup Perplexity Makes Waves With $34.5B Chrome Acquisition Bid | N18G

Last week, AI search engine Perplexity, led by CEO Aravind Srinivas, made an unsolicited \$34.5 billion bid to buy Google Chrome, despite having a valuation of only \$18 billion. This raised skepticism, as Chrome is not for sale, and legal proceedings around a potential breakup of Google are still ongoing. If Chrome were ever spun off, analysts believe it would be valued much higher, and major players like OpenAI, Microsoft, and Apple would likely outbid Perplexity. Chrome dominates the global browser market with over 66% share and 3.5 billion users, making it highly valuable for its user data. Meanwhile, Perplexity and others are launching AI-powered "Agentic" browsers, though their subscription-only model limits adoption. Many see Perplexity’s bid as a strategic move to gain attention and attract investors, rather than a serious acquisition attempt. It highlights the company’s ambition but also its need to stay competitive in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.

Lithium ion Cells, rare earth free motors: Bhavish Aggarwal's make in India plans for Ola Electric

Founder and CEO Bhavish Aggarwal is convinced that success in the electric vehicle (EV) sector hinges on a technology-driven, vertically integrated approach, much like Elon Musk’s Tesla and China’s BYD. In response to the increasing complexities of global supply chains exacerbated by geopolitics, Ola Electric is manufacturing everything in-house—from battery cells and rare earth-free motors to scooters themselves. The Ola Gigafactory in Krishnagiri boasts a production capacity of 5GWh, capable of producing between 1 lakh and 2 lakh cells daily, with around 40 cells required for each scooter. During the visit, Aggarwal guided Moneycontrol’s Chandra R Srikanth through the intricate cell manufacturing process, while candidly addressing questions on market share, user feedback, competitive dynamics and lessons drawn from the public markets.
